There are lots of ways to get free stuff on the internet without winning a competition. Samples are probably the best way if you want some free tea or washing detergent. If you want an iPod or Wii for free you will have to try the sites that want referrals in exchange for the freebie. They work very well and you will receive the freebie, but you will have to tolerate some unpaid advertisements being sent to you and your referrals inbox. If you wish to participate in those sites, sign up for getref or one of the other programs, by giving someone else a ref to get them closer to the gift, you can move one step forward as well.

Easy Free Stuff
These can also be pretty easy if you know how. Basically, you sign up to a freebie site, often called something like freewii4you, then you must then sign up to another site or fill out a survey. Then you need to refer an achievable set number of other members who also complete the signup or survey. Only one or two of us participate on these sites, because you tend to only think about pursuing your iPod and not taking care of other programs you are a member of. The best way to get to your free gift is to sign up to a referral-building site. Getref in particular goes crazy over these sites, people will give you huge numbers of credits for being their ref. You then have to be smart enough to not spend equally huge amounts of credits getting you freebie. This can be done if you choose the right sites, offers and getting your timing right.
